Okay, spacefarers. Let’s talk Metal Plating. You need it. A lot of it. That shiny new hyperdrive upgrade? Needs plating. Building a cool base on a frozen moon? Needs plating. Fixing a crashed starship you just found? Definitely needs plating. It’s one of the most common building blocks out there in the vast No Man’s Sky universe. So, where do you actually get the stuff? Don’t worry, it’s not rocket science.

First up, the best way is crafting it yourself. This is usually the fastest and most reliable method, especially early on. You need a blueprint. The good news? You probably already have it. The Metal Plating blueprint unlocks super early in the game. Just follow the main story missions for a little bit. It unlocks automatically.

Crafting Metal Plating is simple. You just need **50 Ferrite Dust**. That’s it. Ferrite Dust is everywhere. Seriously. Look down at the ground. See those common rocks littering every planet? Mine them with your Multi-tool’s Mining Beam. Boom. Ferrite Dust pours out. A few seconds of mining gives you enough dust for several plates. Keep a stack of Ferrite Dust in your ship or exosuit inventory. You’ll always be ready to whip up plating whenever you need it.

Sometimes you might be low on Ferrite Dust. Maybe you’re in a space station or a trading post. You might be tempted to try the Portable Refiner. Can you refine something into Metal Plating? Nope. Don’t waste your time or resources trying. Metal Plating is a crafted product, not a refined one. Stick to grabbing Ferrite Dust and using the blueprint.

What about buying it? Yes, you can sometimes find Metal Plating for sale. Check the Galactic Trade Terminals. You’ll find these in space stations, minor settlements on planets, trading posts, and even some large freighters. Scroll through the list of available goods. Metal Plating sometimes appears. The price varies. It depends on the system’s economy.

Look at pilots too. Landed NPC pilots at space stations or trading posts often sell goods directly from their ships. Talk to them. See what they have in their inventory. Metal Plating can pop up there as well. Buying is convenient if you have spare Units and absolutely need plating right now. It’s usually more expensive than crafting it yourself though. Ferrite Dust is free for the taking!

One more thing. Crafting Metal Plating also needs **Carbon**. Wait, what? Not for the plating itself. The blueprint requires Carbon to actually *build* the plating. Each Metal Plating costs 12 Carbon to craft. Carbon is super easy to get. Mine small plants or the larger trees on any planet. Carbon is everywhere. Keep a stack handy alongside your Ferrite Dust. You’ll be crafting plating non-stop.

So, that’s the scoop. Mine Ferrite Dust from rocks. Make sure you have the blueprint unlocked. Keep Carbon on hand for the crafting cost. Craft Metal Plating anywhere, anytime. Need it instantly? Check trade terminals and pilots. Forget refining it.
